There are two main medications designed to stimulate hair growth. These are Minoxidil and Finasteride, also known by the names Rogaine and Propecia. The former is applied as a topical solution, typically on bald spots and on a receding hair line. The latter is taken as a tablet.

Both of these are effective, but there are problems with them. The first issue is that they are not effective in all users. There is no definitive figure regarding who can benefit and who can not benefit, but in our experience they tend to work roughly 50% of the time when they are taken properly and for the prescribed length of time. The number of people that experience positive results using these products is actually much lower, especially with Minoxidil, but only because they don’t use them for the full length of time required.

One of the reasons behind that is because it’s too expensive, and that’s another issue with both of these medications. They can set you back quite a lot of money if you purchase a full course of treatment. You can buy generic though if you want to cut costs, just make sure you don’t try to cut corners by shortening your treatment.

The only real issue with this treatment is the price, because it’s not cheap. In fact, it is the most expensive treatment we have mentioned on this page.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that it’s also the most effective, working nearly 100% of the time.

There are a few other treatments worth discussing. Vitamin D seems to be something that we’re either getting far too much of, or not nearly enough of. It can be found in food, but the best way to load-up on Vitamin D is to soak up the sunshine. This is why Vitamin D deficiency is more commonly found in those who live in colder climates, as well as those who haven’t left their parent’s basements in five years (yes, we can see you).

Studies have shown that mice and rats suffering from severe hair loss and alopecia have a damaged vitamin D receptor. This hasn’t really been converted to human testing, but the signs are there and further research is being conducted. We also know that Vitamin D can help to improve the condition of your hair, as well as your nails and skin. So, you’re not doing yourself any harm by making sure you get your recommended daily dose.

You can also supplement with Vitamin D. Studies have yet to prove whether this is as effective as supplementation with other vitamins, but benefits have been reported to some degree. Vitamin D supplements are made from sheep’s wool. The wool acts like a sponge for Vitamin D. After being shaved off, it is squeezed of all its good, oily (and no doubt stinky) Vitamin D goodness. If you can consume these pills knowing that you’re swallowing the greasy detritus of sheep hair, then you’re a braver man than I am.

Vitamin C may also help to improve your skin and hair. Again, it’s not going to give you the look you want overnight. An orange or two isn’t going to turn you into a member of ZZ Top. One of the bonuses with Vitamin C is that it is water soluble and is easily passed out of the body. As a result, it’s not really possible to consume too much of it. You might get a fright during your morning ablutions, as the toilet bowl resembles the Chernobyl meltdown, but it’s unlucky to do you any actual damage.

Other Vitamins for Beard Growth

Vitamin A may also help to condition and strengthen your hair, while aiding with its growth. This vitamin can be found in leafy greens and is fairly abundant in certain foods. However, it’s possible to get too much of it, so be careful about consuming Vitamin A supplements if you’re already taking a multi-vitamin.

Magnesium can also help with beard growth, and it isn’t always found in multi-vitamins. Even the most popular and comprehensive multis only include a very small amount. So, either load up on seeds, nuts and greens, or start taking a magnesium formula.

Plenty of water and plenty of rest will help as well, as will avoiding smoking, drinking, drugs and stress. Quite frankly, if you’re prepared to give up all of that for the sake of your beard, then you deserve all of the acclaim that your hairy face-merkin will give you.
