One of the questions we get asked the most here on Hair Growth Pills is: “How Fast Will be my Hair Grow“? You might think that this would be hard to answer. You might think that genetics, environment and other factors play too much of a role to effectively determine hair growth rate in all individuals. But you would be surprised.
In this guide we’ll look at average hair growth rate to show you how fast your hair will grow, how fast your beard will grow and how fast your eyebrows and eyelashes will grow.
Hair and the Human Body
Hair grows all over the human body. This applies to all of us; men and women and people of all ethnicities. Women tend to grow less hair on their bodies and contrary to what you might think, the reason men and women from certain regions have such visible hair is simply because the hair is so dark that it shows more.
You may notice hair everywhere from your fingers and hands to your toes and feet. The only places that we do not grow hair are the soles of the feet, the palms, the lips, the bellybutton and the eyelids. Scar tissue does not grow hair either.
But when the hair does grow, how quickly does it come in? What is the hair growth rate for the different parts of your body that do grow hair? Well, there are three stages of hair growth. These are known as the Anagen Phase, the Catagen phase and the Telogen phase. All of these stages are discussed in more detail below.
Hair Growth Rate: Stage 1
This is also known as the Growth Stage and it is the main stage of hair growth. It lasts between 2 and 6 years, something that is determined by a number of factors, including genetics. Because this is the main phase of hair growth, the majority of the hairs on your head are in this stage at any one time.
The hairs are constantly dividing on a cellular level and then breaking through the skin, after which the follicles nourish the growth and keep the hair growing.
Although the length that this process lasts can be determined by genetics and other factors, the rate of hair growth is actually the same for everyone and for all of the hairs on your body. This hair growth rate is roughly 0.5 inches per month.
This equates to around 6 inches per year, and this rate is more or less constant, because as soon as this hair growth rate period ends, the cycle begins again.
Hair Growth Rate: Stage 2
The body sends out random signals to end stage 1 of the hair growth period for specific hairs. This happens to around 1 percent of the body’s hair at any given time. This is a transitional period and it lasts for just a couple of weeks.
During this period the hair follicle is afforded the time it needs to regenerate, after which it advances onto the third hair growth stage.
Hair Growth Rate: Stage 3
In this final stage of hair growth the hair follicle will sit dormant, with no activity and no growth. It can remain like this for several months, after which the first stage begins all over again. Around 15% of your body’s hair is in this stage at any given time.
This cycle of hair growth means that you constantly have a full (or what seems to be full) head of hair. The hair grows, it falls out, it lays dormant and then it grows again. The fact that the first stage, the growth stage, is always the most dominant means that even when 15% of the hair is in the dormant stage, it is not visible.
This is one of the many amazing processes that the body goes through and it is one that is as true for the hair on your head as it is for the hair on your face. But as with all amazing processes that the body goes through, there are some major flaws. Hair follicles can become damaged, they are easily destroyed and they are susceptible to damage from a number of natural chemicals that our bodies produce.
That’s why hair loss in men and hair loss in women is so common. Still, there are treatments that you can use to kick-start this cycle all over again and we have discussed these treatments many times on Hair Growth Pills.
Hair Growth Rate: Body Hair
Obviously, there is a reason your eyelashes and your eyebrows are not covering your face and growing at an uncontrollable rate, and that’s because the cycles of growth are much shorter for them. The cycle is the same in that there is a stage of growth, a stage of regeneration and a stage of lying dormant.
You have probably seen a few of your eyelashes or eyebrow hairs falling out and that’s because the second stage has ended for those hairs and they will be entering the third stage soon.
How Quickly to Grow my Hair?
If you are not suffering from any hair loss issues, if you do not have male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness and you do not have a receding hair line, then you can expect to go from short hair to shoulder length hair in approximately 2 to 4 years.
If you use hair growth products to keep the area clean and free of bacteria, and if you use products that can limit hair loss (effectively stopping the early end of that first stage) then you can speed that process up. Such treatments include Minoxidil, which is designed to limit hair loss but can also help to speed up hair growth.
How Quickly to Grow my Beard?
The rate of growth for your beard is the same. The cycles may be shorter, but for the most part the growth will be the same and if you are an adult male then you can expect to go from clean shaven to a full beard in between 12 months and 18 months. There are other factors at play, including genetics and the care that you take over your beard. But contrary to popular opinion, you’re not less of a man, nor do you have less testosterone just because you can’t grow a full beard quickly.
